Hanauma Bay & Manoa Falls Hike!

Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay & Hiking to Manoa Falls!

Blog by: Rosie, Zoe and Maddie

Today, we went to the gorgeous Hanauma Bay, which is a protected nature reserve, filled with an abundance of wildlife. It is located in the crater of a volcano that erupted many years ago. After a safety briefing about conserving the reefs and animals and our own safety, we had the opportunity to go down to snorkel, but not before getting a stunning view of the bay from the top. Some of us went snorkeling while others spent time enjoying the water or taking pictures on the beach.

While snorkeling, we saw many exotic hawaiian species of fish, but some of the highlights were the orange spine unicorn fish, manini convict tang, and a male uhu blue bullethead parrotfish. The reefs were very delicate and beautiful, so we were not allowed to touch them or they would die. Because of the government protection laws on the bay, it was not visibly polluted in any way, and the amount of fish that we saw was amazing! The water was very refreshing because of the hot weather and unforgiving sun! Sometimes snorkeling became tiring at but we are sure that we had a lot of fun, and it was worth it!

After our day at the bay, we hiked back up a small hill to get back to our bus, which is when we spotted a mongoose in a trash can! The bus then took us to Manoa Falls, a hiking path that lead to a beautiful waterfall and stunning views of Hawaii's rainforest. Altogether, the hike was about two miles, and the hike up was strenuous, but the waterfall was worth the effort. The ecosystem was different and more tropical than what we were used to back in Maryland, and the clay soil was very slippery! Thankfully, no one got hurt and we got to see many beautiful plants and tall trees.

Tomorrow we get to go jet skiing for the first time ever!
Aloha!
